MY TESTIMONY

[By Jane Perry ( Pearl City, Hawaii)]

The shores of Hawaii

Undoubtedly, people from all walks of life want to lose weight for a whole different reason. Perhaps you want to feel better about the way you look and give your self-esteem a boost or aim to stop using food as a coping mechanism for emotional struggles. No matter what reasons you have for wanting to shed some pounds or where you are in your journey, this inspiring weight loss success story of mine proves that it’s never too late to turn things around and get a new lease on life.

Living on the shores of Hawaii, I always asked myself whether I was born the way that I am. Friends would always laugh at me at work. They call me all sorts of names such as ‘Chubby Jane’. Even when I and my friends are running to catch up with the bus I am always left behind and this tends to be a headache for me for years. Being obese in the US is frequently accompanied by exposure to weight-related pressure and prejudice from a variety of sources, ranging from negative portrayals of obese individuals in the media to interpersonal difficulties with family members and co-workers. This can lead to adverse physical and physiological health repercussions and is also associated with increased weight gain. Fat bias or weight stigma is a widespread form of social discrimination involving negative weight-based stereotyping. Research indicates that the majority of overweight and obese individuals in the United States have experienced some form of weight stigmatization and I know the story is not too different, wherever you are reading this testimony from the globe.

This is how I look some years back, “ Chubby Jane”

Furthermore, individuals who have not directly faced discrimination can still be negatively affected by weight stigma by internalizing negative social messages about obesity and overweight. As an individual, being privy to this information gave me a bunch of insight that due to the stigmatization I kept on gaining weight instead of losing it. One major incident made become me so focused and I woke up from the slumber to lose weight. I have a long time lovely boyfriend who always supports and encourages me so much. I cherish my love life so much and love him so much that I won’t allow the Mississippi River to even come between us.

When I got engaged to my lovely boyfriend in 2017, I couldn’t have been more excited about it but weighing about 250 pounds, made picking out a wedding dress somewhat of a disheartening process. In fact, I never wanted to buy a ‘plus-sized’ wedding dress, because they cost way more than straight sizes. I felt like I was paying this fat tax — I didn’t have the ability to buy affordable clothes because I was bigger. This situation made us postpone the wedding which was a bitter pill to swallow. I then made the decision to lose weight together and began tracking my calories and meals with some exercises. I was desperate to lose weight to avoid the stigma and embarrassment coupled with buying a straight-sized wedding dress. Unfortunately, all my time and energy spent in ten(10) good months all proved futile as I did not achieve any desirable result. Time was not on my side and my boyfriend was getting more frustrated about the situation. I have a cousin who lives in Ohio who is equally fat. she visited one weekend and surprisingly was totally transformed into a slender lady. Astonished as I was, I shouted” Mavis, wow!”Its time to lay my burdens on the table for her to help me. She introduced me to a professional who deals in fitness and weight management.

Though skeptical at first, the free online consultation sessions with him gave me hope. End of story people, I lost forty-five (45) pounds in the first twelve (12) weeks, as I began incorporating exercise and recommended diets into my routine. By the time the wedding rolled around in nine(9) months’ time, I had astonishingly lost a total of one hundred and thirty-five (135) pounds and was able to walk down the aisle in the dress of my dreams majestically and healthy.

This is how I look now, after the little investment I make, so happy and more healthy, “Happy Jane”
